Stick-On Wall Sconce for a Gothic Apartment Entryway
- Attaches with Removable adhesive
- Damage risk Low
- Best for Best focal point
A black sconce beside the door makes the entry feel like a manor hallway. Battery sconces stick to the wall with removable adhesive and need no wiring.
What you will need
- A lightweight battery sconce with an LED candle
- Removable adhesive strips rated above the sconce's weight
- Isopropyl alcohol and a clean cloth
- A measuring tape and pencil
- Fresh batteries
How to hang it
- Check the weight on the packaging, then choose adhesive strips rated well above it.
- Hold the sconce up at the height you want and mark it lightly with a pencil.
- Clean the wall spot with a little isopropyl alcohol and let it dry.
- Press the strips to the sconce, then press the sconce to the wall for about 30 seconds.
- Wait an hour before putting the battery in, so the full weight does not load the strips too early.
- Switch it on and check that it stays level.
Where it goes
Placement. Mount it beside the door, centered at roughly 40 to 48 inches so you can reach the switch and replace the batteries from a seated position.
Damage and take-down
Adhesive strips can pull paint on poor-quality walls, so test one small spot first. To remove, pull the tab straight down along the wall slowly, as the packaging says, and do not pull outward.
Mistakes to avoid
- A sconce heavier than the strip rating.
- Sticking on dusty or textured walls.
- Mounting too high to reach the switch.
Make it better
Add a faux cobweb draped from one side, and a pair of sconces on both sides of the door if the layout allows.

Safety for every piece
- Check your lease and building rules. Some buildings limit what may hang in shared hallways or on doors.
- Do not cover the peephole, the number plate or the smoke detector, and keep decor off sprinkler heads and fire exits.
- Keep the walking path clear and wide enough for a wheelchair. Decor mounted between 15 and 48 inches from the floor sits within the ADA reach range, which also helps if you use a wheelchair.
- Check the weight rating on every adhesive hook before you hang a wreath or any heavier piece.
