Most wheelchair costume guides lean toward kids, cartoon vehicles and cute. This page is for adults who want dark: the chair becomes the set. Each build is made to put together while seated, with notes on what to check so it does not interfere with your wheels, brakes or controls. Tap a build for the full guide.

Estimates. Times and help-needed ratings are rough estimates. Your chair, your tools and your helper will change them, so adjust the plan to your own setup.
Safety checks for every build
- Nothing may block, touch or catch in the wheels, hand rims, brakes or controls. Keep fabric above the wheels and make every attachment quick to remove.
- On a power chair, also keep clear of the joystick, cables, battery and vents.
- Keep tall pieces light and low on the chair so they do not change your balance.
- Check that the finished build fits through a standard door.
- Add reflective tape or a battery LED so you are visible in low light.
- Use nontoxic paint and avoid sharp or small detachable parts.
- Foam board is light but can catch wind. Test it on a short roll before you go out.
- Skip themes that mock patients or institutions, such as asylum costumes. They read as jokes about disability, not horror.
If you would rather buy
Wheelchair costume pieces are sold by large costume and general retailers, and some adult-sized options exist, but stock and prices change, so check the retailer's current listing. If an order will not arrive before Halloween, use the DIY build instead.
