A gothic porch runs on black, bare branches, candlelight and a little decay, and it has to stay safe for everyone who walks, rolls or climbs up to the door. Each guide below lists how the piece goes in, how it handles weather and what to keep clear. Tap a piece for the full guide. If you live in an apartment, see the apartment entryway version.

- JOYIN 16-inch Halloween tombstones, 9-piece set with 18 metal stakes (keep the metal stakes off the walkway)
- Outdoor black lantern (check that it is rated for outdoor use)

Keep the route safe for everyone
- Keep an accessible route from the sidewalk to the door at least 36 inches wide, and wider if you can. Nothing sticks out into it, no cords cross it and no stakes line it.
- Light every step edge. Fog, webs and costumes make edges hard to see.
- Use outdoor-rated lights and cords, plug them into a GFCI outlet and keep connections off wet ground.
- Keep decor off the handrail, the door, the house number and the doorbell.
- Skip open flames. Use battery or LED candles, especially near fabric, webs and paper.
- Bring in anything that can fly or tear in a storm.
Check the product. Wind ratings, weight and outdoor use depend on the actual product, so read the packaging before you set anything up.
