Black Rose Wreath for a Gothic Apartment Entryway
- Attaches with Over-the-door hanger
- Damage risk None
- Best for Best centerpiece
A black rose wreath is the centerpiece of the door. It reads as formal and slightly funeral, and the over-the-door hanger means you never touch the paint.
What you will need
- A black rose wreath, about 14 to 20 inches wide
- An over-the-door wreath hanger rated for the weight
- Optional: a black ribbon, a few faux feathers or a small bat
- A cloth to pad the hanger where it touches the door
How to hang it
- Check the wreath's weight and the hanger's weight limit.
- Place the hanger over the top of the door and let the hook hang on the outside.
- Hang the wreath and check that it sits centered and clears the peephole.
- Add a black ribbon or a few feathers to the wreath.
- Close the door a few times to be sure the hanger does not rattle or scratch.
Where it goes
Placement. Hang it at or below 48 inches so you can reach it from a seated position, and adjust the hanger drop so the wreath sits at that height. Make sure it does not cover the peephole or the number plate.
Damage and take-down
Over-the-door hangers can scratch the top edge of a door, so add felt on the contact points. They leave nothing on the face of the door.
Mistakes to avoid
- A wreath that is too heavy for the hanger.
- A wreath that covers the peephole.
- A hanger that stops the door from closing properly.
Make it better
Add a trailing black ribbon that hangs down to one side, or a small battery LED string woven in for a faint glow.

Safety for every piece
- Check your lease and building rules. Some buildings limit what may hang in shared hallways or on doors.
- Do not cover the peephole, the number plate or the smoke detector, and keep decor off sprinkler heads and fire exits.
- Keep the walking path clear and wide enough for a wheelchair. Decor mounted between 15 and 48 inches from the floor sits within the ADA reach range, which also helps if you use a wheelchair.
- Check the weight rating on every adhesive hook before you hang a wreath or any heavier piece.
